The mother held the child to ensure calmness and stillness for the picture, which required a longer exposure time than today's instant snapshots. As the picture was supposed to be just of the child, the mother was hidden by a blanket or cloth. With the scarcity of photographs, it would have been nice if every face was captured on the film. This practice is still done today for photographs of babies lying on material with a parent underneath. Modern-day photographers are more adept at hiding the parent in such pictures.
